Celebrating Life Insurance Awareness Month 2026

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. This marks a great annual reminder to take a step back and take stock of your current coverage, financial obligations, and goals for retirement. As your family and career grow, your needs and coverage scenarios can evolve.

Here’s a quick run-through of life insurance basics to consider.

Determining Your Coverage Needs

Every household can have different coverage needs. These can be determined by a number of factors, including your age, the age and occupation of your spouse, the number of children you have, your income and the size of your mortgage. Non-mortgage debts like loans or credit card balances also may be factored into planning, so your family is not left navigating surprise debt.

Kinds of Coverage

Term life insurance: This can be the more affordable option, designed to provide protection during a person's prime working years. If the policyholder dies within the policy term (10, 20, or 30 years), the death benefit is paid out to their beneficiary. Here, premiums are fixed for the length of the term, but if the policyholder chooses to keep the plan after it expires, the premium will go up each year.

Whole life insurance: This is permanent coverage designed to last a lifetime. It provides a guaranteed death benefit, subject to the policy’s terms and the premiums being paid. Over time, whole life insurance also develops cash value, which you can access through a policy loan if needed while the policy is in force.1

Annuities: Annuities are typically focused on the later years of life, designed to provide another source of income during retirement.
